Tom Cruise has been a heartthrob for nearly 40 years, but that doesn’t mean he’s always been lucky in love.
The Top Gun: Maverick star has three marriages (which gave him three children) and a slew of girlfriends under his belt, and the speculation about his love life has been as intense as some of his action scenes. That’s partly because Cruise tends to only date other famous people, even before he became an A-lister himself! Check out Tom Cruise’s dating history, and keep in mind that he may be the world’s most eligible bachelor right now: As far as we know, he’s currently single!
Did Tom Cruise date Melissa Gilbert?
Yep! Back when he was just Thomas Mapother, Cruise dated Melissa Gilbert. In an episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Gilbert said that she was around 16 or 17 years old (making Cruise roughly 18 or 19) at the time, adding candidly, “I did not have sex with him. We made out, but honestly, there was no sex. He was a good kisser, but you know, he was like a struggling, starving actor and I was working. I actually bought him his first set of dishes.”
Tom Cruise went on a single date with Heather Locklear
Cruise took Heather Locklear out for a night on the town, but to hear her tell it, he may have been a bit too extra for her. Locklear revealed in a 2013 Chelsea Lately interview that she met Cruise when they were both auditioning for a project and felt sorry for him because he didn’t have any friends in Hollywood yet. She took him out dancing, and said he basically reenacted one of his most famous movie scenes ever in the middle of the nightclub.
“You know in Risky Business where he does that dance in his underwear and does the splits? We were dancing at a club and he went into that,” she recalled. “He starting doing the splits. You just kind of stand there and don’t know what to do. Do you dance around him? So, I was like, ‘I’ll just sit down and you can.’” Locklear confirmed that they didn’t do any dancing together after that.
Did Tom Cruise date Risky Business co-star Rebecca De Mornay?
At least one person appreciated Cruise’s Risky Business dance moves: His co-star, Rebecca De Mornay. The pair had sizzling chemistry onscreen that extended to an offscreen romance. Tom Cruise and Cher were hot and heavy for a moment
The world didn’t know about it until long after it was over, but Cher and Cruise hooked up! The “Believe” singer revealed that Cruise cracked her list of her top five lovers throughout her life, noting, “It was a long, long time ago and neither one of us ever talked about it and I don’t know why. When we were together he was such a private person. He always has been until lately. He didn’t mention it and I didn’t mention it. I loved him though, he was amazing.”
In another interview, Cher recalled meeting Cruise for the first time at Madonna and Sean Penn‘s wedding, then again at a White House event raising awareness for dyslexia. She said that they had immediate sparks, but that they didn’t act on them until much later.
Who did Tom Cruise marry first?
At this point, it feels like ancient Hollywood history, but Cruise did have a low-key first marriage long ago to Mimi Rogers, who Cruise met at a dinner party in 1986 when she was dating one of his friends. They tied the knot in a private ceremony in May 1987 with Emilio Estevez reportedly serving as best man. Cruise joined the Church of Scientology while he and Rogers were together.
In 1990, he told Rolling Stone of his marriage to Rogers, “I’d never been in love before. Since I’ve been with her, it’s opened me up a lot. I think it’s helped me be a better actor. We live a lot of life together. We share everything…I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She’s my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her.”
As romantic as that sounded, unfortunately, it wasn’t quite meant to be, and they divorced the same year.
How did Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise meet?
“He basically swept me off my feet. I fell madly, passionately in love,” Kidman told Vanity Fair in 2002. “And as happens when you fall in love, my whole plan in terms of what I wanted for my life—I was like, ‘Forget it. This is it.’ I was consumed by it, willingly. And I was desperate to have a baby with him. I didn’t care if we were married.” While Kidman (who was raised Catholic and never joined Scientology) and Cruise didn’t have biological children, they share two adopted children, daughter Isabella and son Connor. The couple filmed two more movies together, Far and Away in 1992 and the super-steamy Eyes Wide Shut in 1999.
Cruise filed for divorce in February 2001, shocking the world—and likewise, reportedly blindsiding his wife. That October, Cruise told Vanity Fair of the split, “She knows why, and I know why. She’s the mother of my children, and I wish her well. And I think that you just move on. And I don’t say that lightly. I don’t say that with anything. Things happen in life, and you do everything you can, and in every possible way, and there’s a point at which you just sometimes have to face the brutal reality.”
Did Tom Cruise date Penélope Cruz?
Penélope Cruz met Cruise while filming Vanilla Sky shortly after his split from Kidman. They made their public red carpet debut as a couple in August 2001 at the premiere of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. While some reports alleged that Cruz and Cruise had an affair during his marriage to Kidman, they each vehemently denied it, with Cruz insisting she’s never fallen in love with a co-star during filming, but that she has dated some after production has wrapped.
“I’ve never fallen in love with someone I’m working with. It’s always been afterwards. If something becomes friendship, then maybe months later it becomes something else, but you can never know,” Cruz—who, like Kidman, was raised Catholic—told The Telegraph. “It’s always a mystery. You can’t plan those things.”
The couple split in January 2004, but didn’t announce it for several months. There was reportedly no animosity, with sources telling PEOPLE that the romance had simply run its course.
Did Tom Cruise and Sofía Vergara date?
Sofía Vergara was rumored to be courted by Cruise, but whether or not anything happened remains murky. When The Daily Beast asked the Modern Family star what it was like to be with Cruise, she “laughed hysterically” and said, “Let’s keep it that way! I don’t want to talk about that!”
Tom Cruise briefly dated Nazanin Boniadi
Vanity Fair reported that Cruise courted actress and fellow Scientologist Nazanin Boniadi from October 2004 until January 2005, with their earliest romantic dates being in the Big Apple, including a private tour of the Empire State Building and private ice skating in Rockefeller Center. The relationship fizzled, however, and Boniadi declined to speak at length about her brief love affair with the Mission: Impossible star.
How did Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise meet?
Cruise’s most highly publicized relationship was with Katie Holmes. The two had a whirlwind romance—and a shocking split. The Dawson’s Creek actress has admitted she had a crush on Cruise when she was a teenager, and by 2005, they weren’t just an item—they were all over the place, with Cruise infamously jumping for joy about his new love on Oprah Winfrey‘s couch in May 2005. By April 2006, they welcomed daughter Suri Cruise, and they wed in Rome that November.
Despite their enthused early days, however, the love didn’t last: Holmes filed for divorce in June 2012 and retained full custody of Suri. The divorce settlement didn’t take long (just 11 days!) thanks to a reportedly iron-clad prenuptial agreement from Holmes’ father, an attorney. When asked about the divorce, Cruise said on a German talk show, “I did not expect that. To be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have a grip on everything, and then it hits you—this is it, what life can do to you. Life is a tragicomedy. You need to have a sense of humor.”
Cruise has not publicly dated anyone since his divorce from Holmes.
