Host, Award Nominees, Presenters, Time, Channel

Like an evil-twin or long-lost-husband storyline twist, the 48th annual Daytime Emmy Awards are coming to 2021 in ways you might never expect.

For one thing, the telecast—taking place Friday, June 25, at 8 p.m. ET—is in the second year of its grand return to television after it was relegated to a webcast from several years in the 2010s. For another, after 2020’s ceremony was an all-virtual program thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, producers are promising a different, fresher “hybrid” format for 2021 that will combine pre-taped segments and speeches with live, virtual connections, as well as a live-and-in-person component that will take place at an L.A. studio.

“It’s the first step in getting back to normal. I think we’re getting there, and viewers will feel more like they’re watching an award show this year,” producer David Martin recently told Variety. “When we have the opportunity to have a presenter who is a big part of daytime and a boldface name, then we’re using whatever technology is available to produce their presentation of an award. It’s a bit of a mix. Those who are in the Los Angeles area, we are encouraging them to do their bits at [the] studio… It’s a big set with a red carpet area.”

Martin and his producing team have also promised that things will get back to normal in 2022 with a fully in-person ceremony at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Who’s the 2021 Daytime Emmys host?

Sheryl Underwood for the win! The co-host of the Talk is emceeing the Daytime Emmys for the fifth time in a row—but it’s her first time hosting on her own. She previously co-hosted alongside Mario Lopez, as well as with her entire Talk cast in 2020.

“She’s a great friend of daytime programming and a great friend of the Academy, so it just worked out,” says NATAS director Steve Ulrich. “In fact, if it’s not the record, then I think she’s certainly up there in terms of someone who has hosted our Daytime Emmys more than anyone else.”

Who is getting a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2021 Daytime Emmys?

According to Variety, “NATAS opted not to hand out lifetime achievement awards again this year, to avoid robbing honorees of the normal pomp and circumstance that comes with a live audience.” However, there will be tribute segments devoted to such recently deceased daytime TV icons as Regis Philbin, Alex Trebek and Larry King. They’ll be honored by the likes of Kathie Lee Gifford, Ken Jeong, Martha Stewart and Robin Roberts.
