Get ready for more upheaval in the always-changing daytime-TV-talk-show landscape! On July 1, UK’s Daily Mail reported that Meghan McCain is expected to announce on today’s episode of The View that she’s leaving the longtime gabfest.
Even more shocking, she’s reportedly walking away even though there’s two years left on her current The View contract, and her co-hosts weren’t told before today’s news broke that the 36-year-old daughter of the late Sen. John McCain would be leaving.
A source at Disney—which owns ABC, The View’s network home since its inception—says, “Meghan will announce her resignation on Thursday’s show. “She will finish at the end of July 2021.”
Why is Meghan McCain Leaving The View?
The reasons behind McCain’s decision are unclear so far, but expect McCain to shed some light on the question during The View’s July 1 episode. Daily Mail’s source would only say, “We have tried to keep her, but she is adamant that now is the right time for her to leave.”
While McCain has long been known to frequently butt heads with her View co-hosts, as recently as a few months ago, she insisted that she wasn’t stepping down.
“Whether we like it or not, I’m not going anywhere on the show,” she told Andy Cohen in mid-January on Watch What Happens Live. “We’re all going to try and co-exist and I really want to have us all move forward.”
And in 2019, ABC shut down rumors that McCain would be calling it quits after The Daily Beast claimed she was “seriously considering calling it quits and not accepting ABC’s offer to return for The View’s 23rd season next September.”
Hilary Estey McLoughlin, the show’s senior executive producer, told the news site at the time, “We don’t want people to attack Meghan. We’re happy to have Meghan there. I think she does want to be there. I think she wants to be on the show. She realizes it’s a very good platform for her and we love having her there. I feel like she will come back.”
Who are the current hosts of The View?
Right now, McCain shares hosting duties alongside Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin.
When did Meghan McCain join The View?
McCain has been a View panelist for four years, first signing on as a co-host in the fall of 2017. Prior to that, the 36-year-old conservative firebrand had worked at MSNBC and Fox News.
