If you’ve been enjoying as many summer weekends and weeknights eating outside as we have, my question is this: how many plates of potato and macaroni salad have you had? They are definitely the go-to side dishes when it comes to summer time meals and gatherings, but we need to switch it up now and then.
Broccoli and Grape Salad is a simple side dish filled with summer freshness perfect for your next burger night or neighborhood potluck.

I have been making a broccoli salad my grandma taught me for years. It’s a beloved family recipe, but this time around I wanted to incorporate different flavors. The crunchy broccoli pairs so well with the cool grapes, the nuts and cranberries give it an extra texture and flavor boost. I still added bacon because, well, it just makes everything better and the mayonnaise-based dressing gives it a creamy, yet tangy, finish.

How To Make Broccoli and Grape Salad
I love this salad because I can assemble it ahead of time and have it waiting on me come supper time or when the party begins. Plus the prep takes almost no time at all! I always have a package of pre-cooked bacon in the pantry, so I crisped it in the skillet and chopped it. You can certainly use about 8 slices of fresh, or even a couple packages of real bacon bits too!
If you’ve never chopped fresh broccoli, it can be a little messy. I like to put my cutting board right next to my kitchen sink so clean up is easier. Chop it into small bite size pieces, but not so small they fall apart or get soft in the dressing. The crunch factor of this salad is one of the best parts.
The mayo-based dressing is a pretty basic one for summer time salads. Creamy mayonnaise with tangy vinegar and just a smidge of sweetness from sugar. I use a similar dressing on coleslaw too!
Mix the broccoli, grapes, almonds, cranberries and bacon in a large bowl. Pour the dressing down over and gently fold to get everything coated. Transfer to a serving dish and allow to chill for a couple hours in the fridge.
This salad might have a short ingredient list, but it has big flavor! It is sure to be a hit at your next summer party or just a simple side for a busy weeknight burger supper.
Best Broccoli and Grape Salad Tips
- Use a large sharp knife to chop the broccoli. Cut the large crowns into bite size florets, making sure most of the woody stems are discarded.
- Mayonnaise works best in this dressing, but if you prefer salad dressing (aka Miracle Whip) instead, go for it. If you’re trying to lighten things up a bit, Greek yogurt would work too, but you might want to add a little extra sugar.
- Pre-cooked bacon can be found in the meat section of the grocery store, next to the other bacon and sausage products. Fresh bacon or real bacon bits can be substituted as well.
- Swap the dried cranberries for raisins or golden raisins if you have those on hand.
