May 13 (UPI) — Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was arrested on misdemeanor charges, jailed overnight and released Friday after he was accused of withholding property from the mother of his child, a police spokesman told UPI.
Jeudy was arrested Thursday afternoon by Arapahoe County (Colo.) deputies and held in Centennial, Colo., on a second-degree misdemeanor criminal tampering charge.
On Friday morning, Arapahoe County Court Judge Chantel Contiguglia freed Jeudy on a $1,500 personal recognizance bond. An arraignment hearing is scheduled May 31 at the Arapahoe County Courthouse in Centennial, Colo. That facility is located adjacent to the Broncos training complex.
Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown told reporters at a news conference that deputies responded to a call from the mother of Jeudy’s child at 10:15 a.m. MDT Thursday.
Brown said the woman was reporting a “keep the peace situation” and said Jeudy was in control of her property, which included a wallet, a car seat and medical info for their child. Jeudy put those items in his car.
Brown said the child was present, but there was no physical contact between Jeudy and the woman, and no property was damaged. Deputies determined there was probable cause to arrest Jeudy, who they said was cooperative and taken into custody without incident.
Brown said Jeudy was not able to appear before a judge Thursday and have bond set because he was arrested after the day’s deadline for court appearances.
9 News Denver, Pro Football Network and the Denver Post reported that the alleged victim appeared Friday in court and told Contiguglia that she wants the charge against Jeudy dismissed. The judge gave Jeudy permission to travel.
Jerry’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, told reporters Friday that he doesn’t think Jeudy should have been arrested.
“I don’t believe a crime has been committed,” Steinberg said. “I don’t believe my client did anything that would rise to the level of a crime.”
The Broncos on Thursday said they were “aware of the matter” and were in the process of gathering more information. The NFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment, when asked if it will investigate the matter for potential violations of the league’s personal conduct policy.
Jeudy, 23, joined the Broncos as the No. 15 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The former Alabama star totaled just 467 yards on 38 catches and did not score a touchdown in 10 games last season. Jeudy is entering the third year of his four-year, $15.1 million rookie contract.
The Broncos started rookie minicamp Friday and start voluntary organized team activities May 23. The Broncos will hold mandatory minicamp from June 7 to 9.
