Following season 1’s record-breaking ratings, our favorite Regency drama was renewed for seasons 3 and 4 in April 2021.
Netflix released the news in a letter from Lady Whistledown herself, reading, “Esteemed members of the Ton, it seems we have a rather special announcement. Bridgerton shall return for seasons three and four. This author shall have to pen more ink…”
“Bridgerton” on Netflix is skipping ahead. Season 3 of the historical drama based on Julia Quinn’s books will explore the love story of Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan), according to Coughlan during the FYSEE event on Sunday.
The first two seasons were based on the first two novels, with Season 1 focusing on Daphne Bridgerton’s (Phoebe Dynevor) romance with Simon (Regé-Jean Page) and Season 2 on Anthony Bridgerton’s (Jonathan Bailey) romance with Kate (Simone Ashley).
While the third book focuses on Benedict Bridgerton’s love life, the fourth book’s subject, Penelope, will likely be postponed until a later season.
Penelope overheard Colin, whom she has admired for years, stating that he will never marry her during the Season 2 conclusion of “Bridgerton.”
Following Season 2, creator Chris Van Dusen stepped down as showrunner, and Jess Brownell took over.
“Bridgerton will always have a special place in my heart and I think I did what I set out to do,” he told RadioTimes in March. “The fact that this show has become Netflix’s biggest English language speaking series ever is something I’m incredibly proud of, and something I’ll always be incredibly proud of. But at the end of the day, you know, it was time for me to move on, and hopefully create that magic again in the near future.”
Another change in Season 3 will be the part of Francesca Bridgerton, which was formerly played by Ruby Stokes. Stokes left Shondaland after landing the lead in Netflix’s “Lockwood & Co.,” and was replaced by Hannah Dodd.
When will the third season of ‘Bridgerton’ be released?
Bridgerton might be back soon, according to Rhimes, because the creative team has already begun working. Lady Whistledown herself hinted at a filming timetable in March 2022, when actress Nicola Coughlan told Women’s Wear Daily’s Instagram that she expected to begin filming this summer. According to that timeline, fresh episodes could arrive as early as spring or summer 2023.
Season 2 of Bridgerton broke the records set by the first season to become Netflix’s most successful English-language TV series ever, so the streaming provider has every reason to get season 3 out to viewers as soon as possible.
While the first two seasons of the Netflix blockbuster focused on Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathon Bailey), the third book is on Benedict Bridgerton. Variety has an exclusive interview with Jess Brownell, who took over as showrunner after Chris Van Dusen left.
Season 3 of ‘Bridgerton’ will be based on which Julia Quinn novel?
The next book in Quinn’s trilogy, An Offer From a Gentleman, is a Cinderella-esque narrative about Benedict’s love for Sophie Beckett, an earl’s daughter forced into servitude by her nasty stepmother. If you’re wondering why the next leading Bridgerton isn’t a woman, the novels’ order starts with Daphne and then goes through the children in alphabetical/age order (Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Eloise, Francesca, Hyacinth, Gregory).
The Netflix show, on the other hand, has chosen to bring up another sibling’s book earlier than intended. Coughlan stated that next season will focus on Colin and Penelope’s romance, which will be strained by Penelope’s actions as Lady Whistledown and her falling out with Eloise, during a panel discussion at Netflix’s FYSEE event.
“Like Lady Whistledown, I’ve been holding a secret for a long time, and I can now announce that season 3 is Colin and Penelope’s love story,” she stated. “I’ve been keeping it secret since the second season began, and this is the first time I’m revealing it.”
In a Tudum article, Coughlan discussed the decision, noting that continuing Colin and Penelope’s narrative a season sooner made sense. “If you see Penelope adoring this boy for another season, you’ll be like, ‘Get it together! Come on, move on, and get over it,” she remarked.
“Jess has talked to Luke and I through the season, and I think people are going to be really obsessed. I think book fans are going to be happy.”
