The first set of Presidential debates took place on Thursday 27th June, and the whole world was glued to their screens to catch a glimpse of what the candidates for the US elections had to say.  With former President Trump, and current President Biden going toe to toe, we all expected contrasting energy, policies, and views. It is safe to say that the debate wasn’t disappointing.

In this post, we look at some of the interesting takeaways from the debate, and what impacts it could play in the coming polls.

Trump's Exaggerated Claims

Trump’s answers were riddled with a whole lot of exaggerated claims which is usually his tactic. As a man who always had something to say, he droned on about his strength and ability to lead while drawing similarities with his achievements in golf.

Trump claimed that he had won two golf championships, a statement that was debunked by fact-checkers. His reliance on hyperbole and embellishment seemed to trump his ability to give factual answers. However, this approach bodes well with his supporters base, and it will be interesting to see if it appeals to the wider American populace.

Biden the Bad Palestinian

The war in the Middle East was also raised that day, and both candidates had a lot to say about the support of the United States in the outcome of the crisis. As much as both Biden and Trump claimed to champion the Israelis' cause, they both had contrasting views on how that should happen.

Initially, Biden had reiterated how the US supports Israel, but Trump believes that Biden is more of a closeted Palestinian. He went on to talk about how Biden interfered in the crisis that had been raging in the Middle East since last October claiming that he should allow Israel free rein. Trump also added a jab where he claimed that Biden was a ‘Bad Palestinian’ and that the Palestinians don't even like him.

Biden's Struggling Performance

The awaited debate had everyone in stitches and even in a mood of concern. This concern was especially turned toward President Biden’s performance which was quite lackluster.

Unlike his counterpart Donald Trump, Biden struggled through and even seemed unprepared for the debate, as he struggled with cohesiveness and articulating his thoughts. There was an instance where he said “billionaires” as “trillionaires”, which further armed his opponent with banter material. And we all trust Trump to capitalize on such scenarios.

Trump's Controversial Statements on Abortion and Immigration

Another battle that seems to have no end between the Democrats and the Republicans is the issue of Abortion and Immigration. Trump didn't mince words and came out accusing the Democrats of supporting late-term abortions, and said Biden wanted to “rip the baby out of the womb”.

He also argued that Biden’s open border policy was causing a crisis that might be hard to contain as this is allowing terrorists and prisoners to infiltrate the US. However, Biden didn't see it in that light as he claimed that his administration has been able to manage the influx of immigrants.

Final Thoughts

Both candidates have shared their thoughts on what they have to offer the citizens of the United States and everyone now waits with arms folded to see how the results unfold. Would the greatest nation in the world vote for an energetic but hyperbolic leader in Trump or would they maintain the status quo by sticking with Biden?
