Despite being family, Vin Diesel and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson have had a tumultuous relationship since their initial onscreen partnership in 2011's Fast Five. Their ongoing grudges toward each other have been apparent since 2016.

The two action stars, including former wrestler Rock Johnson, joined the already long-running franchise as Luke Hobbs played an agent pursuing the Fast and Furious crew for their numerous crimes against every law enforcement agency in the world.

Back in 2001, when the series just began, only a few viewers could have dreamed up that the first release in the series, The Fast and the Furious, would spawn even one sequel, let alone a multibillion-dollar franchise including an animated TV series and a theme park ride.

At the end of the first movie,  there were no public problems, even if The Rock's smile was a little fixed at the April 2011 premiere of "Fast Five" in Brazil. Everything seemed to be in order over the years as Johnson returned for the sixth and seventh entries in the saga. However, the Jumanji star set the fandom ablaze on August 16 when he referred to unnamed cast members as "candy asses." in a since-deleted Instagram post.

Rumors instantly Swirled around that he insulted Diesel, who had been part of the Fast franchise since the first movie premiered in 2001. Not many days later, after filming for The Fate of the Furious wrapped, Johnson shared another Instagram post thanking the cast and crew of some of his castmates.

In the caption, he thanked his entire Fast 8 "family" and gave several of his principal co-star's noticeable shout-outs, like Scott Eastwood and Nathalie Emmanuel by name, but pointedly did not mention Diesel.

Later, the duo's co-star Michelle Rodriguez confirmed the tension between the men on set. She chalked it up to the kind of disagreement any close friends could have.

She says; "Any human being who understands what men are like knows to stay off from those situations and let them figure it out," in September 2016, she said; "They're friends, bros man and ultimately even friends reach a point where they have to set aside their differences to make a movie  and that is the bigger scheme of things."

Tyrese Gibson, a fellow Fast Saga actor, was somewhat less diplomatic when F9 was delayed for the first time in October 2017, which was later delayed again because of the coronavirus pandemic.

He wrote on Instagram, "Congratulations to @TheRock and your brother-in-law aka 7 bucks producing partner @hhgarcia41 for making the fast and the furious franchise about YOU," seemingly to be blaming Johnson for the movie's production delays.

But Diesel defended the San Andreas actor from his accusations, asserting that it wasn't any one person's fault and the franchise was "in need of maintenance." Johnson, meanwhile, left the main Fast Saga and starred in his spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw.
