The seven-year-old Chinese Crested dog named Scooter, who narrowly escaped being put down after being born with deformed back legs, has won the title of World's Ugliest Dog in 2023
Being born with reversed hind legs, Scooter isn't what many would call a customary beauty as it is nearly bald, save for a shock of white wispy hairs. However, it's these kinds of peculiarities that enchanted the puppy judges at the "World's Ugliest Dog" contest in Petaluma, Calif., where the scooter took home the grand prize on Friday.
Scooter, who now is celebrated for his irregularities, was once faced with death for his deformity. He was born with two deformed hind legs, which hindered his ability to walk, according to his biography on the contest's website.
As a new pup, Scooter was saved by a volunteer at the Saving Animals From Euthanasia rescue group (SAFE) after a good samaritan brought him into animal control in Tucson, Ariz. "He knew that this pup would have a fair chance at finding a good home and a fairly normal life with the support of our rescue group," the biography said.
When the 7-year-old pup gets tired from navigating on his front feet, he props himself on his butt, "which he uses as a tripod. Recently, Scooter got a new cart to help with his mobility and is now able to zoom around the park like the other dogs and welcomes any outstretched hand.
According to the Daily Mail, Scooter was adopted by Linda Elmquist seven months ago with the help of a man with the rescue group.
