Shakira Will Receive 'Latin Woman of the Year" Award

On Monday, Telemundo and Billboard announced that Shakira would be honored with the 2023 Woman of the Year award at the first Latin Women in Music event airing next month.


The Super Star Pop Singer is receiving the award for her profound contributions to the music industry, which has brought recognition and opportunities for Latin women through her career and generous efforts. 


The Columbian and songwriter, who is also known as the “Queen of Latin Music '' is well known for her versatility in music. Her choice of music language has paved the way for Latin singers to break into international stardom. She has created a movement all by herself, and she has been more relevant than ever today, with grace, a deep culture of giving back with enormous talent", Billboard’s chief content officer for Latin/Español, Leila Cobo, said in a statement.



All Shakira's Awards 


Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll headlined the Super Bowl halftime show alongside Jennifer Lopez in 2020 and was also a coach on NBC’s “The Voice” in 2013 and 2014. Before this, the singer has been voted Billboard's Top Female Latin Artist two times over the decade (2000 & 2010) and received three Grammy Awards. She also received 12 Latin Grammys, seven Billboard Music Awards, and 39 Billboard Latin Music awards.

News from NBC confirms that the Latin singer has sold more than 95 million records worldwide, which makes her the be Awardsling Latin female artist of all time. In 2022, her single album “Monotonía,” was one of the biggest Spanish-language songs of the year, and became the most streamed Latin track on Spotify in 24 hours. The song hit No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Shakira the first solo woman to reach the Top 10 with a Spanish-recorded song.


Telemundo’s president of entertainment and content strategy, Ronald Day, said in a statement: “Her passion, talent, and creativity have smashed barriers and her music has strengthened generations to fall more in love with our culture, and we are incredibly proud to recognize her as Women of the Year in the industry.”



More About The Latin Woman of the Year Award 


The Latin Women in Music event is scheduled to take place on the 6th of May at the Watsco Center in Miami but will be aired the next day which is the 7th of May. The event will also be available to stream on the Telemundo app and Peacock. The Telemundo, Peacock, Universo, and “TODAY” are owned by NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News.


The record-breaking music special will celebrate Latin women artists, administrators, and relatives, and will present honorees and performances from Emilia, Ana Gabriel, Goyo, Evaluna, and Thalia.


Shakira deserves this award because she has played a pivotal role in shaping the diverse landscape of Latin music throughout her career, and has opened doors for Latin artists to traverse into international artists.
